Marty Gaunt, Vice President of Bill Davis Racing, was born in London, England, and grew up just outside Toronto, Ontario, Canada.  Motorsports was in his blood at an early age, and success wasn’t far behind.

Gaunt began racing in 1978 as a crew member for his then-17-year-old brother, John.  The two were the terror of the late model stock circuit around Southern Ontario, and they finished nearly every race they entered at the front of the pack.  Marty’s first time behind the wheel at age 17 finished well.  He entered a 200-lap Enduro.  And he won it.  The victory proved not only his driving abilities, but also his talent for building cars that could last and his uncanny organizational skills.

Canadian driving legend and CASCAR Champion Peter Gibbons recognized Gaunt’s mechanical and organizational skills and hired Gaunt as the crew chief and team manager for his CASCAR stock car racing team in 1992.  CASCAR recognized those abilities as well and named Gaunt Mechanic of The Year in 1993.  It was the organization’s highest honor for a team member.

After counseling from Gaunt, Gibbons joined the ARCA circuit the following season, and Gaunt again served as his crew chief and team manager.  The following year, Gibbons moved his entire operation to North Carolina, insisting he would go only if Gaunt agreed to join him.  Following his move south, Gibbons began competing in a limited NASCAR® Nationwide Series schedule.

NASCAR’s Cup Series called Gaunt in late 1996, and Gibbons reluctantly urged his team manager to take advantage of the call.  Michael Kranefuss hired Gaunt to serve as team manager for his Kranefuss-Haas Racing team and driver Jeremy Mayfield. Gaunt was named the team’s general manager shortly thereafter.

In 1998, Kranefuss teamed up with racing legend Roger Penske to form Penske-Kranefuss Racing.  Gaunt lead the No. 12 Cup Series entry to its first victory in 1998 and remained with the Penske team until January 2001.

With five years of Cup Series management on his resume, Gaunt returned his attention to the Busch Series.  As general manager of MK Racing, he helped lead driver Elton Sawyer to finish fifth in the Series’ Championship point standings.

In 2004, Gaunt took on another dual role as part-owner and general manager of Red Horse Racing, which secured its first NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series victory at Memphis Motorsports Park in 2005.

Gaunt joined Red Bull Racing in 2006, where he was literally the first employee hired for the team’s launch into the Cup Series.  He built the multi-car operation to nearly 200 employees and led the Toyota Red Bull Racing teams into the 2007 Cup Series season.

In 2008, Gaunt joined Bill Davis Racing as the Vice President.  With Gaunt’s experience and passion for success, Bill Davis Racing’s teams should quickly grow into one of the top NASCAR teams.
