The No. 22 team of Phillip McGilton went into the Martinsville short track as a rookie, but had all intentions of coming out on top. Even though the Raybestos rookie candidate had never raced on the half-mile track before, McGilton had tested on it and was looking forward to the race.
Running well during Friday’s practice sessions, McGilton and his No. 22 team made numerous changes in order to get his Tundra up to par. Finishing out the day in the seventh position on the speed charts the team was more than pleased and ready for their qualifying attempt.
Posting a time of 20.054 seconds, McGilton would land himself in the 12th position for the start of the Saturday afternoon race.
As the flag waved over the field, McGilton immediately radioed over to crew chief Doug Wolcott that his Tundra was free. Having to pit numerous times during the race in order to try and fix the truck, McGilton would stay calm and stay on the lead lap as he showed his talent well.
With his truck getting better each time they lowered the trackbar, McGilton would move his way through the field until the truck would eventually get worse throughout the race. Hanging in there and driving hard, McGilton would try and maintain his position on the racetrack.
With numerous caution flags waving throughout the 253 lap race, McGilton would keep his head on straight and avoid many collisions as he would finish out the day in the 16th position.
The Craftsman Truck Series will race again in three weeks at Kansas Speedway. The race will be televised live Saturday, April 26 on the Speed Channel.
