2008 Daytona Testing Update - Day 1

Single car runs were the order of the day on the first day of the second session of NASCAR Sprint Cup testing at Daytona International Speedway Monday. Dave Blaney and the Caterpillar Racing team prepared two Toyota Camry’s for the three-day test and spent the morning making two to three lap runs with the Camry known as 22B. Holding down a solid spot in the top 10 on the speed charts, Blaney was one of six Toyota teams taking part in this week’s test. With minutes to go in the session before the track closed for lunch, the Bill Davis Racing team sent Blaney out in the second car, known as 22, and again Blaney posted speeds inside the top 10. At the conclusion of the morning session, the Cat Toyotas held down seventh and eighth place on the speed charts.

It was more of the same in the afternoon as the team alternated between cars making two and three lap single car runs all afternoon. With about 30 minutes left in the afternoon session, Tommy Baldwin and crew taped up the grill and sent Blaney out for a mock qualifying run. Two laps later, the No. 22 Toyota found its way to the top of the speed charts, where it remained until the end of day despite late efforts by Tony Stewart in his Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. in his Hendrick Chevrolet. Blaney ran the fastest lap of the session thus far (48.532 seconds/185.445 miles per hour around the 2.5-mile tri-oval) which was also faster than any of the teams in the first session last week could achieve outside of the draft.

A scheduled engine change is on tap for Tuesday morning and NASCAR is set to the let teams out on the track for drafting practice Tuesday afternoon.
